ALTAR GUILD PROCEDURES

During the week/Saturday

Vacuum carpet and tile floor in the Altar area

Dust all Altar furniture

            Altar and Communion Rail

            Pulpit, chairs, retables

            Baptismal Font, piano, organ

            Choir chairs

Fill candles each week. According to our candle instructions we are to leave the wick

exposed “1/8” inch or the size of a match head. The manufacturer requests

we not trim wicks unless specifically instructed to do so.

Paraments, Frontlets and Banners are usually changed under the direction of Pastor Repp.

Note seasonal color changes and contact Jane Rose or Pastor Repp if colors are incorrect.

Saturday

Prepare grape juice – 8 inner circle glasses on 2 trays (2½ trays for summer services)

Do not keep grape juice over from week-to-week

Fill remaining glasses on 2 trays with wine

Fill all glasses 2/3 full

Stack from top down – cover, full tray, empty tray, full tray, base; Empty tray should always be under a top full tray

Fill Flagon 2/3 full (approximately 3 cups), cover

Leave chalice empty, cover with Purificator

Leave small bottle of antibacterial hand cleaner on the back of the retable.

We have a communicant who is allergic to wheat.

After washing your hands, place wheat free wafer in the small silver covered vessel from the travel communion kit, or on glass saucer if travel communion kit is not available.

Do this BEFORE handling the wheat bread

Place wrapped bread on Paten and cover with Purificator. Pastor Repp prefers the small Paten. If bread does not have a cross on it cut a shallow cross in the bread so it is easier for Pastor to break.

Arrange vessels on the Retable (from left to right – Chalice covered with Purificator, Flagon, Burse {with trifolded Corporal and Purificator}, covered trays, wrapped bread with cover). See diagram in the Sacristy.

Cover all with veil

Festival Days (Christmas and Easter) – more trays will be needed along with 2 loaves of bread

Between services

Pour consecrated wine from Chalice into glass to be poured on the ground after second service

Wash and dry Chalice. Leave Chalice empty. Cover with Purificator

Fill Flagon 2/3 full (approximately 3 cups)

Arrange 2 full trays (as prepared for early service with juice in inner circle) and stack with empty tray, cover and base as above

Place new loaf of bread on Paten and cover (place left over bread in a bag behind the vessels on the Retable)

Arrange all vessels on the Retable per diagram

Cover all with veil

After last service

Check altar area and communion area for spills or crumbs and clean up.

Pour wine in Chalice and unused grape juice on earth

Discard left over bread on the ground for the birds. Children many come back and offer to do this. Ask them to do it if the opportunity arises.

Pour blessed, unused wine back into bottle marked “Consecrated”

Wash all communion cups, vessels, etc. in hot water and suds

Drain cups on white towel and cover

Wash kitchen towels, etc. at home as needed

Wash Purficators by soaking (if necessary) in cold water and suds. Line dry. Press.

Some Purificators are made of 100% cotton and iron better when sprayed with water.

Wash all other linens when soiled. Soak in cold water and suds. Line dry. Press
